State-of-the-art
LASIK equipment
The Technology:
Be aware of the new laser technology available to you.
Most of the lasers do a fine job and the biggest factor in
the surgical outcome is the surgical team's actual surgical
skill.
But there are significant differences in the lasers that
one should not overlook. Some lasers give a smoother corneal
surface and have an eye-tracking device that better
guarantees that the laser treatment is properly centered and
focused, and some lasers do not.
See FDA approved lasers.
Note VISX Star S3 is the latest technology.
The fellowship trained LASIK specialists at any center you
choose should be using the newest generation lasers and laser
surgery software. The state-of-the-art Visx Star S3 (there
are some Visx lasers that do not have an eye-tracker) with
activetrak excimer laser is known to be the very best
equipment with which to perform laser vision correction.
We feel strongly that the Visx Star S3 is the finest
excimer laser technology available for patients today.
Advantages of the Visx Star S3 Laser with
3-Dimensional eye-tracking:
- Visx is a company created by the original researchers
in the ocular use of excimer lasers. Visx has been the gold
standard in the U.S. for many years. Their superb research
team has maintained their position as an innovator and
quality excimer laser manufacturer.
- Visx utilizes a unique technology that consists of
seven individual rotating and revolving laser beams that
give a fast, consistent and smooth result that patients can
rely on.
- Over 2 million cases in the U.S. alone have been
performed with Visx lasers.
- It tracks onto the center of the pupil in real time and
enables the laser to follow even subtle movements of the
eye during treatment so both the doctor and patient can
feel more assured that the treatment is taking place in the
correctly centered location on the cornea. Also, it does
not require dilating drops to work.
- If the eye is noted to move significantly (past 1.5 mm
from center), the tracker will immediately stop the laser.
Once the laser is realigned, the laser continues right
where it left off. This attribute of the eye tracker is
another reassuring feature of Visx S3 technology.
- The eye tracker also has the unique capability to not
only follow side to side eye movements but also up and down
movements of the eye, thus this is the world's first and
only three dimensional tracker... so sensitive it even can
follow the up and down movements from breathing.
- Unlike some flying spot lasers, the Visx Star S3
utilizes a treatment zone that both maximizes patient
comfort in dim light situations with an 8 mm blend zone if
needed and avoids the dangerous situation of removing too
much corneal tissue when treating patients with high
prescriptions.
Admittedly this is all a bit technical for all intents and
purposes, but let us emphasize that one should ask a laser
center if the laser utilized has any tracker at all.
Go to a
center that has a tracker and
beware of a center that does nothing but emphasize the fact
that they have a tracker since they may not have much else to
talk about. |

"Choosing the wrong eye doctor for laser vision
correction is an awful mistake. Many LASIK surgeons use
outdated equipment and rush you through the procedure."
